Renowned mycologist and author Paul Stamets once emphasized the profound connection between humans and fungi, revealing that we share nearly 50% of our DNA with these organisms. Mycology is also deeply connected to the life-death cycle in various ways. Fungi play crucial roles in decomposition and nutrient cycling within ecosystems. When organisms die, fungi are among the primary decomposers breaking down organic matter, returning nutrients to the soil, and facilitating the cycle of life. While individual human deaths signify an end, viewed from a broader perspective, death transforms into a new beginning, particularly when considering its impact on the environment. In our modern society, where the quest for prolonging life is met with scientific advancements, there is a growing effort to comprehend and minimise the ecological repercussions of death. This exploration led to a unique artistic endeavor involving the use of mushroom mycelium, inspired by the concept of community within mycelium networks. The artwork symbolises the intricate relationship between humans and fungi, highlighting our close kinship with these organisms. It delves into the co-evolutionary symbiosis between fungi and humans, offering an innovative perspective on death's impact on our surroundings. This work also touches upon toxin remediation, illustrating how mushrooms decompose and cleanse toxins within the body, suggesting a new approach to contemplating death and the interconnection between our bodies and the environment. Through captivating visual representations, the artwork amalgamates mycelium and human figures, depicting the emergence of a new species. The underlying message is profound: accepting death signifies embracing our physical existence and acknowledging our intimate ties with the environment, as encapsulated in the age-old adage, “we come from the soil and return to the soil.” Ultimately, the artwork serves as a reflection on our shared home, Earth, and the intricate relationships between humans and non-human entities on our planet.
