‘Remember Yesterday, Live Today, Expect Tomorrow II’, 2025-ongoing

Installation, Text, PVC, 1200mmx 2000mm

‘Remember Yesterday, Live Today, Expect Tomorrow’ explores the invisible yet tense and organic interdependence between humans and nature, critically exposing the anthropocentric mindset embedded within this relationship. The work begins with the primal dynamic of humans as predators and nature as prey. The ensuing ecological disruption reveals humanity’s exploitative attitude toward nature, whilst simultaneously opening a paradoxical space for imagining coexistence. Mediated through time and movement, the work visualises the intricate intersections between human perception and behaviour toward nature, and nature’s responses.

A PVC mat-shaped installation acts as both a material and symbolic boundary dividing “nature” from “human space.” This boundary serves as a site of encounter and collision between the human and natural realms, which, from an ecocritical perspective, can be read as a culturally constructed and ideologically charged division. The artificial materiality of PVC as a synthetic medium embodies both civilization and environmental pollution, representing the surface of a human-made ecosystem. Designed to filter dust and contaminants, the mat reflects humanity’s contradictory stance toward nature: the desire to protect while simultaneously seeking domination and control.

As viewers unconsciously walk across the piece, their footsteps subtly transform the mat’s surface, visually revealing the traces humans leave upon nature and the ensuing transformations. These shifting marks serve as metaphors for the mechanisms of human violence and relentless exploitation.

The work invites reflection on the ethics of coexistence and responsibility, urging viewers to recognise themselves as integral parts of the ecosystem. Through the evocation of memory and the passage of time, the work envisions the possibility of a renewed and sustainable relationship of coexistence between humanity and the natural world.
