A Free Breakfast: Today’s Job with Yesterday’s Tool with Future Concept, 2016

Installation, Mixed Media, Dimensions Variable

‘Today’s Job with Yesterday’s Tools with Future Concept’ (2016), implies a paradoxical & circular concept that aims to contradict the original object’s purpose. A space where the collapse is just as important as the illusion and where incidental moments, that are generally left unacknowledged, are finally recognised. By taking accidental occurrences out of the everyday and manipulating their elements, Showna Kim attempts to create and give life to artificial scenarios and experiences that would otherwise not occur. A drop of water conveys scintillating noises, transforming the state of the water into a performance and introducing a refreshed perspective to our quotidian reality. Audio-visual chain reactions are formed from juxtaposed sources and reformulated through repetition and timing. One aspect that fuels the work is the re-creation of the space into an environment which is both physical and experimental. Showna aggregates phenomena, experience and space in order to push the audience into suggesting their own narratives. By conducting small experiments over time, testing objects and materials to create ‘ phenomena-producers’ Showna is ever involved in expanding and investigating the our unknown world.
