‘The Boundary of the Uncanny’, 2023
Installation, Writing, Typewriter,Thirty Sheets of A4 Paper, 210*297mm
‘The uncanny valley theory originated from the uncanny effect which was first proposed by German doctor Ernst Jentsch in 1906. The core proposition of Jentsch’s article entitled “Uncanny Psychology” was that human can have fear of unknown things’.
The pandemic has affected public mental health and well-being, instigating many changes for living life, and with it (at times), great uncertainty, altered routines, financial pressures and social isolation. The virus had an effect on all living things, eliminating dualities between existing creatures and their networks. The work,‘the boundary of the uncanny’(2023) deals with pandemic-era bodies morphing by uncontrolled contagion, encompassing fear of the futureat the same time. By way of parasitic viruses causing sense loss (scent, taste), the work attempts to reveal the ways in which mutation occurs and morphs into a distinct sense of discomfort and loss. Tracing the psychological changes of entering into unknown territory of novel illness, this autobiographical work recorded imagined scenes of mutation by using humor and language from the first day of illness until recovery. The use of UV light represents a means of killing off germs, bacteria and viruses, also new coronavirus variations and SARS-Co V-2.
